朱古力瘤又稱「卵巢內膜異位囊腫」，也算是子宮內膜異位的一種，簡單說就是子宮內膜跑到了卵巢。因為子宮內膜的碎片隨經血逆流經輸卵管進入盆腔，附著在卵巢表面或盆腔其他部位，形成「異位囊腫」，這種異位的子宮內膜仍受卵巢性荷爾蒙的週期性影響，也會發生「月經」樣出血，經血無法排出體外，儲留在卵巢內。久了以後，儲留於卵巢內的經血越積越多，使卵巢增大，形成陳舊性積血的囊包，裡面其實是長期累的陳舊血，外觀呈巧克力糊狀，故又稱為「朱古力瘤」。
中醫角度認為，朱古力瘤的形成與瘀血有關。當患者體內出現氣滯、體寒、腎虛、氣虛等問題，血行不暢，瘀血凝滯，朱古力瘤就會形成。因此，活血化瘀是中醫治療子宮內膜異位的基本原則。除了用活血化瘀方藥，中醫臨床常用的治療方法還有針灸。
